Steel mill Industry
A modern integrated steel mill has the following functions to produce primary steel products:
- iron making (conversion of ore to liquid iron),
- steelmaking (conversion of pig iron to liquid steel),
- casting (solidification of the liquid steel),
- roughing rolling/billet rolling (reducing size of blocks)
- product rolling (finished shapes).
Steel mills are one of the industries where automatic lubricators are very popular and utilized because of various places that maintenance workers are not able to access easily. Due to its huge scale, a modern integrated steel mill can be unmanned and fully automated. The length of conveyor systems carrying iron ore, coal (coke), and limestone usually reaches up to several kilometers. The steel mill equipment works under various extreme conditions; from very low temperatures to very high temperatures, low speed to high speed, severe dust contamination and high humidity. Premature bearing failures happen frequently due the failure of lubrication.
Some steel plants are small but have many pieces of rotational equipment for single point automatic lubricator such as conveyors, motors, tension bearings, etc.
Not only do integrated steel mills have a great need for automatic grease lubricators, but also mini mills with rotating equipment greatly benefit from using automatic grease lubricators.
